If you've ever typed a question into ChatGPT and gotten back an answer that felt generic, flat or just plain wrong, the problem is almost never the tool. It's the question. Here is the short answer on how to ask ChatGPT a question: tell it who to be, give it your situation, say exactly what you want back, and set your limits. Learning to ask this way is the fastest way I know to turn artificial intelligence from a toy into a real business partner, and most people were never taught how. I use artificial intelligence every day to run 3 companies as a mother of 3, and I built an entire platform around one belief: what matters most is HOW you ask.
Why Your ChatGPT Answers Feel Generic
ChatGPT and Claude respond to exactly what you give them. When you type "write me an Instagram caption," you're asking the tool to guess your brand, your audience, your tone and your goal all at once. It can't read your mind, so it averages everything out and hands you something that sounds like everybody else. Give it something vague and you'll get something vague back. Give it specifics and you'll get specifics. That's really all there is to it.

How to Ask ChatGPT a Question: The 4 Ingredients
Every strong prompt I write has the same 4 ingredients. First, a role: tell the tool who to be, like "act as a retail buyer for a national beauty chain." Second, context: your situation, your audience and your goal. Third, format: spell out exactly what you want back, whether that's a table, a script or 3 headline options. Fourth, constraints: word count, tone and anything it should avoid.
When I negotiate with manufacturers for Havenly, my Gen Z beauty brand, I never ask "how do I negotiate." I ask, "act as a sourcing expert who has negotiated with beauty manufacturers for 20 years, I am a founder ordering my first 10,000 units, give me the 5 leverage points I have and the exact language to use for each one." Same tool, and a completely different result.
Before and After: A Real Example
Weak question: "Give me marketing ideas for my app."
Better question: "Act as a growth marketer who has launched consumer apps for women. My app helps women get clarity on confusing dating conversations. My audience is women ages 22 to 40 who live on TikTok and Instagram. Give me 5 launch ideas ranked by cost, with the first step for each one."
The second one took maybe 30 extra seconds to write, and it saves hours of back and forth. That's what you get for asking better.
The Shortcut: Let Experts Write the Question for You
I'll be honest with you. Most women don't have time to become prompt experts, and they shouldn't have to. That's exactly why I built LUMAPROMPT.AI, a premium prompt generator and curated library written by human industry experts and designed around how women take in information and make decisions. Every prompt is written by professionals who understand real world results. Nothing is scraped or machine averaged. It works with ChatGPT and Claude, takes the guesswork out, and lets you go straight to getting things done. You ask better questions, you get better results, and you waste a lot less time.
Common Questions
Do I need to write long questions for ChatGPT? Not long, just specific. 2 to 4 clear sentences with a role, context, format and limits beat a vague one liner every time.
Can I ask ChatGPT a follow up question? Yes, and you should. Treat it like a conversation. Ask it to shorten the answer, change the tone or explain a step. It remembers what you said earlier in the same chat.
Does this work in Claude too? Yes. The same 4 ingredients work in Claude and in every other AI chat tool.
Ask Better, Build Faster
You don't need to be technical to get world class answers from artificial intelligence. You need a role, context, a format and constraints, or someone who has already written the question for you.
